The green bond Bootcamp was organized in New Delhi, India from 19-20 November 2019, in partnership with Climate Bonds Initiative. The training kickstarted a dialogue at the municipal level on the innovative financing mechanisms that can be leveraged to finance green projects. The Bootcamp aimed at building the capacity of municipalities on the issuance of green bonds and their benefits. The Bootcamp brought together around 30 participants which included industry experts from the Bombay Stock Exchange, CRISIL, Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy, KPMG, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and ICLEI South Asia and representatives from various municipal corporations and state governments.
Participants have gained knowledge and insights on the following themes:
- A thorough overview of the green bond market history, basics as well as domestic and global developments to date
- A thorough overview of key market dynamics (such as pricing, investor role/behavior, the role of funds/indices, etc.)
- Insights into the role of regulation and key policy developments around the world
- A deep dive into new EU sustainable finance developments and implications for Emerging Markets seeking to attract international green capital
- In-depth knowledge of the CBI taxonomy and proposed EU taxonomy
- A thorough overview of internationally endorsed standards and definition frameworks for green, as well as relevant local variants
- A good understanding of all key global green bond labelling schemes, including CBI certification, adapted local regulations and the proposed EU Green Bond Standard
- Understanding the basics of the CBI process for international green bond certification.
- Development of a roadmap of market development initiatives for the local market – for follow-up
As a follow-up from the training, there was a strong demand for technical assistance in supporting the issuance of green bonds, which is expected to take place going forward.
