The role of infrastructure is critical to promoting sustainable economic growth, improving regional connectivity, and achieving low-carbon climate solutions in ASEAN. Driven by urbanisation and the need for economic development, the infrastructure investment required in ASEAN is estimated at USD3.1tn over 2016-2030. An additional USD400bn of investment is predicted for renewable energy development.
There is a need to attract the flow of green finance to the region, particularly the mobilization of a more private capital through the green bond market. Currently, much of the region’s investment in public infrastructure is being carried out through PPP ventures; however, as the demand for green infrastructure grows, public funding is not sufficient to meet the demand – new channels will be necessary to mobilise private capital. To widen the funding source, it is also important to engage both domestic and international investors.
In response to this challenge, Climate Bonds is developing a series of reports that aim to identify and demonstrate green infrastructure investment opportunities in ASEAN. The aim of these reports is to raise awareness of what is green and where to invest, and to promote green bond issuance as a tool to finance green infrastructure. The latest reports to be developed are the Green Infrastructure Investment Opportunities (GIIO) Indonesia Update report and the GIIO Vietnam report.
With the restrictions imposed by the COVID19 pandemic, the launch of these reports cannot occur at a live event and so will need to be launched via a virtual medium. This proposal aims to present the options for doing so: via webinar and podcasts.
Key objectives
- Raise awareness of what is green and where to invest, and to promote green bond issuance as a tool to finance green infrastructure in ASEAN.
- Launch the GIIO Indonesia Update and GIIO Vietnam reports virtually in an interesting and informative way.
- Promote a dialogue among green finance stakeholders in Indonesia to create a more viable regional green finance ecosystem.
- Provide information in both English and the local language.
